WHY DOES MY AIR CONDITIONER FREEZE-UP?

This is a common problem, especially during these hot days of Summer when A/C's have to run so much longer.  There are basically two main causes of air conditioner freeze up and these are low freon charge and low airflow.

  • Since it is basically freon that makes your air conditioning system cool, one would think that freeze-up would be the result of too much freon in the system.  But, on the contrary, it is usually low charge that is found to be the culprit.  Cooling is generated by changing the pressure and state (liquid or gas) of the refrigerant in your system.  Your outdoor unit pressurizes and cools the refrigerant to change it into a liquid, and the indoor unit depressurizes it which causes the indoor cool to pull heat from the air in your house and turn back into a gas.  If the pressure drop is too great there will not be enough heat available and freezing will occur.

  • Similarly, if there is not enough airflow moving across the indoor coil, there will not be enough heat energy to completely change the state of the refrigerant, causing freezing.  This can be caused by a dirty air filter, restricted ductwork, dirty indoor coils, or a bad blower.

So, if you are having trouble with your A/C "freezing-up", be sure to first check your air filter and make sure that none of your supply and return air registers are closed or covered-up, and if the problem persists - call for a qualified technician.
